Beacon Isles is a logic puzzle game for Android and iPhone. This page explains what the app does with information about you.
In short: your progress stays on your phone, and there is no account. The app shows ads from Google AdMob, and Google uses some information about your device to show them. Where the law asks for it, you choose whether those ads can be personalized, and you can change your mind at any time.
What stays on your phone
The app saves your progress (solved maps, best results, Daily results and your streak), your settings, boards you are partway through, maps you make in Maker, how many free hints you have used today and when you last saw an ad. They are kept in the app's own storage on your device and are never sent to the developer or anyone else; there are no Beacon Isles servers.
If you have turned on your phone's backup (Android backup to your Google account, or iCloud backup on iPhone), it may include this storage. That backup belongs to you and is handled by Google or Apple under their own privacy policies.
To delete it all, use Reset progress in the app's Settings, or uninstall the app.
Ads
The game is free. Every day you get three free hints; after that a hint costs a short video ad, and sometimes an ad appears between levels. These ads come from Google AdMob, through the Google Mobile Ads SDK built into the app.
To choose, show and measure ads, Google's SDK collects and sends to Google:
- your device's IP address, which can show its approximate location;
- device identifiers: the advertising ID on Android, the app set ID, and on iPhone the advertising identifier (IDFA) only if you allow tracking;
- how you interact with the ads and the app, such as app launches, taps and video views;
- diagnostic information, such as crashes, app launch time and performance.
Google uses this information to deliver ads, to measure them, to limit how often you see the same ad, to prevent fraud and, if you allow it, to personalize ads. The data is encrypted in transit. Google explains this in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and in its privacy policy. The developer receives only overall reports from AdMob, such as how many ads were shown, and nothing that identifies you.
Ads in the app are limited to content suitable for general audiences and for most audiences with parental guidance.
Your choices
- In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, the app shows Google's consent message the first time it starts, and ads are personalized only if you agree. To change your choice later, open Settings in the game and tap Privacy choices.
- On iPhone, the app asks whether it may track you. If you choose Ask App Not to Track, the advertising identifier is not shared and ads are not personalized with it. You can change this in your iPhone's Settings, Privacy & Security, Tracking.
- On Android, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone's Settings, under Privacy, Ads (on some phones Google, Ads).
Ads still appear whatever you choose; your choices decide whether they are personalized.
What the app doesn't do
Beacon Isles has no account, and the developer runs no analytics or crash reporting of their own. The app doesn't ask for your location, contacts, photos or files. The game works offline; ads need an internet connection, and when none can be shown, hints are free.
Sharing
When you tap Share, for example to send your Daily result or a map you made, the app hands that text to your phone's share menu. You choose the app and the people it goes to. Beacon Isles doesn't see or keep what happens next.
Children
Beacon Isles is made for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. The developer doesn't knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
If a future version changes what the app handles, for example to offer purchases, this page will say what changes and get a new date before that version is released.
